Booker Taliafero Washington was an orator, civil rights activist, professor, writer, and a poet. Washington dedicated his life to education as a means of acquiring equality. He founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama, and the National Negro Business League.

MADAME C.J. WALKER
Sarah Breedlove McWilliams C.J. Walker was an inventor, businesswoman and a self-made millionaire. Madame Walker was an African American that made many beauty and hair care products that are extremely popular. She started her cosmetic business in 1905. Her first hair care product was a scalp treatment and she began making beauty products soon after. She began to see door to door and they soon became popular.

Araminta Harriet Green Tubman escaped slavery in Maryland in 1849. She then helped hundreds of other slaves to the north for freedom via the Underground Railroad. She helped John Brown recruit soldiers for his raid on Harpes Ferry (1895). She spied for the Union during the US Civil War. She also founded the Harriet Tubman Home for Aged Negroes. Mrs.Tubman devoted her life to fighting slavery and championing the rights for women.

After becoming a preacher, she campaigned for the abolition of slavery and for women's rights. During the US Civil War, she helped soldiers carry supplies and also worked as a counselor for the National Freedom Relief Association.

JACKIE ROBINSON
Jack (Jackie) Roosevelt Robinson was the first African American male to play major league baseball. On, April 11, 1947, Robinson played his first major league baseball game (he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in an exhibition game against the New York Yankees). He played in six World Series and was the first African-American in the Hall of Fame (1962).

ROSA PARKSRosa Parks was born Rosa Louise McCauley. She was a pivotal figure in the fight for civil rights. On December 1, 1955, a Montgomery bus driver told Rosa to give up her seat to a white man. When she refused she was fined and arrested. This caused a huge bus boycott and eventually led the Supreme Court to rule that bus segregation was unconstitutional.

Thoroughgood Marshall was the first African American justice for the US Supreme Court. He was apart of a team of lawyers that concerned school desegregation, Brown vs. The Board of Education. After a successful career of being a lawyer and judge fighting for civil and women rights, he was appointed to the high court in 1967 by President Lydon Baines Johnson. On the high court, he still continued to fight for human rights until he retired on June 27, 1991

He was assassinated on April 4, 1964 in Memphis, Tennessee. Ever since then, we have a special day for Dr. King each year in January. August 28, is the anniversary of the famous "I Have A Dream" speech.

He later attended Fisk University, then transferred to Harvard University; he was the first black to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard. He soon became a teacher and later studied the state of black people.

Caver developed many products from peanuts, sweet potatoes, pecans, and soy beans; his discoveries improved the agricultural output and the health of Southern farmers. He invented rubber substitutes, adhesives, food stuffs, dyes, pigments, and many other products.
